Customer Photo - Lady Langhorne

Lady Langhorne’s owner had already designed her name before contacting us - they’d worked up the look in an AI image generator, flourish scrollwork and all, and wanted it reproduced properly in vinyl. We took their concept, redrew it as a cut-ready file, and sent it out ready to fit. It’s a route into a boat name order we’re seeing more of: people using AI tools to test a look before committing, then asking us to turn the result into something that’ll actually stick to a hull.

Can you use an AI-generated design for a boat name?

Sometimes - it depends!   An image generated by Midjourney, ChatGPT or any other AI tool. None of these are cut-ready on their own - so bear in mind we may charge a redrawing fee. An AI-generated image is a picture made of pixels, not a vector outlines, so a plotter can’t cut it as it stands. Sometimes we can easily trace them, others take a bit more work - it depends on the overall complexity,

Rebuilding a flourish design as cut vinyl

Lady Langhorne’s design used flourish scrollwork wrapped around the lettering, a popular look on narrowboats and one that’s fiddly to cut cleanly if the linework isn’t tidy. AI-generated art often has soft edges, slightly uneven strokes or details that blur at small sizes, fine on screen, not fine on a knife plotter. We traced the flourish by hand, corrected the linework so every curve cuts as one continuous path, and kept the proportions and spacing the customer had already settled on. The result looks like their concept, not a generic scroll font swapped in to save time.

Ordering a boat name from your own design

Send us whatever you’ve got: a photo, a sketch, an AI-generated image, or just a written description of what you want. Tell us the boat name, the letter height you need, and any colour preference, most solid colours are straightforward, and we can talk through options like a two-tone or shadowed letter if that’s part of the design. If you already know roughly how much space you’ve got on the hull for the name, that helps us get the sizing right first time.

What happens next

We’ll send a proof back before anything is cut, so you can check the letterforms, spacing and colours match what you had in mind. Once you approve it, we cut the vinyl as a single weeded, taped-up sheet — ready to peel and stick straight onto the hull. Lady Langhorne’s owner fitted theirs themselves: it’s a job most people manage comfortably with the application tape in place and a bit of care around the flourish detail, no special tools needed beyond a squeegee and a dry day.

Got a design already, AI-generated or otherwise? Get in touch and we’ll tell you what we need to turn it into a cut-ready boat name.
